Development of regional aviation to facilitate air hub creation at NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport

Management officials of NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport participated in the Session dedicated to the transport system expansion within the Novosibirsk region, held on August, 7 under the supervision of Igor LEVITIN, RF President’s advisor.

During the working visit to Novosibirsk, Igor LEVITIN examined the construction progress of the regional strategic transportation facilities, including preparations for passenger terminal and airfield complex modernization of NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport. On completion of construction works, the floor space of the international passenger terminal will expand from 11,000 m2 up to 24,000 m2 while its capacity will be doubled. In addition, the complex project implies reconstruction of several airfield infrastructure objects of NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport for late 2014, includingSurfaced RWY-1 and taxiway system.

RF President’s advisor highly appreciated the passenger traffic growth rates of the airport. Following the results of 2012, passenger traffic totalled 3.266 mln people while in 2013 it expects to serve about 3.7 mln passengers. According to Igor LEVITIN, the airport needs to evolve regional air transportation for further development. "It is possible for NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport to become an air hub, on the global level. For that purpose it is necessary to develop regional and interregional routes," commented Igor LEVITIN.

Since the beginning of 2013, flights from Novosibirsk to Kemerovo, Barnaul, Novokuznetsk, Strezhevoy, Kyzyl and Abakan were launched thanks to the government support available for those air carriers who provide regional air transportation services. Furthermore, the government started subsidizing flights to Gorno-Altaysk, Tomsk and Khanty-Mansiysk. New routes are expected to be opened in the short term, thus, enabling regional passengers to use an extensive route network of NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport, which covers over 90 destinations in Russia and abroad.

NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport is the largest air hub in Russia east of the Urals on major transit routes between Europe and Asia. The domestic airline capacity makes up 1,800 passengers per hour, on international flights – 750 passengers per hour. The airport has two runways. In 2013 it expects to serve over 3.7 million passengers and handle over 35 thousand tons of cargo and mail.
